Four-year old Christian was a healthy and very happy little boy who loved to play outside with his younger sister.  Unfortunately, the life of this happy 4-year-old suddenly changed.  One day, Christian started to suffer from fever and fatigue. During the first days, his pediatrician associated his symptoms to a common virus. But after having fever for more than 15 days, his health deteriorated.  “He was very weak and pale.  He wouldn’t stop crying,” remembers Flor, Christian’s mother.

Due to his symptoms, Flor felt desperate and took her son to the nearest emergency room, but doctors there could not find a diagnosis.  Within weeks, Christian was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.  Doctors at St. Jude soon discovered that Christian suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia and his life was in danger.

“I couldn’t believe this was happening to us, but the doctors at St. Jude gave us hope,” recalls Flor.

Currently, Christian has finished several cycles of chemotherapy and goes for checkups every month to monitor his progress.  Every four months doctors also check his bone marrow.  “As a mother it has been very difficult to see my son suffer,” said Flor. “But I thank God because he is in good hands.”

Although Christian is a very brave little boy, he still has a long road ahead of him.
